According to a recent report by the Nepal Telecommunications Authority, 58.98 percent of the total population of Nepal use broadband internet. Proper use of the Internet has made it possible to know the news from home and abroad, and to talk to friends and family who live far away. In the same way, the Internet has brought to the fore the key to the vast store of entertainment and knowledge. It has been providing invaluable assistance in the educational, intellectual and personality development of the children as well as in the expansion of social relations.

But misuse of the internet is making many, especially children and young people, insecure. Lack of cyber security awareness has led criminals to abuse the Internet and the social networks that operate through it. Therefore, to avoid cyber crime, it is necessary to be aware of it and know how to use the Internet safely.

How can children be exposed to the Internet?

• Cyber ​​Security Ignorance: Children are at risk if they do not know about the privacy of the Internet and the security of personal content, viruses and information theft or other harmful websites and programs.
• Weak passwords: Children are at risk when they have a weak password, such as 12345 or their name, which is easily guessed, is not returned from time to time, or is shared with a friend.
• Online contact with strangers: Adding contacts to strangers to increase the number of friends online, keeping your personal information and photos on Facebook visible to everyone can put children at risk. Violent attacks, information theft, online sexual exploitation, fraud, and heinous acts can be perpetrated by strangers made online. 
• Child-friendly inquiries: Proposals from unfamiliar online friends on social media and inquiries about new websites, apps and games (which can be harmful) can put children at risk for sexual abuse, cheating and cheating. 
• Greed: Children can fall prey to cybercrime by falling into the trap of fraudulent ballots, prizes, opportunities to go abroad, including fraudulent messages sent through Facebook, Twitter, Viber, Messenger, WhatsApp, SMS and even email. 
• Lack of guidance: Children are also at risk because of the lack of information provided by parents and teachers about cyber security. Unaware of the cyber law and punishment, some children may be trying to hurt others by creating fake IDs. Most people are not aware that fake IDs can be detected and dealt with.

Keeping Children Safe on the Internet

•  Keep strong passwords, change them from time to time and don’t give passwords to anyone. 
•  Protecting privacy by setting privacy settings on social media.
•  If someone hurts a child online, tell a parent, sir / mistress or trusted friend.
•  Blocking and reporting disturbing bad ‘online friends’.
•  Don’t make friends with strangers online.
•  Phone no. With friends made online. And don’t share what should be kept secret.
•  Don’t post photos and videos on your phone, computer or Facebook that might offend you, or send them to others.
