Bruce Babbitt (1938 A.D- 2021 A.D), American politician and environmentalist, United States secretary of the interior under President Bill Clinton (1993- ). Born in Los Angeles on June 27, 1938 A.D, he earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame, a master’s from the University of Newcastle-England, and a law degree from Harvard Law School in 1965 A.D. Upon graduation he served for two years as an assistant to the director of Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA), then went into private law practice in Phoenix, Arizona.
In 1975 Babbitt ran for the Arizona attorney general’s post as a Democrat and won. Three years later, he moved to the governor’s seat, where he served until 1987 A.D, when Bruce Babbitt began an unsuccessful bid for the U.S. presidency. A lifelong environmentalist, he took over as president of the League of Conservation Voters, a national organization that works to elect pro-environmental officials.
In 1993 A.D President Clinton chose Babbitt as secretary of the interior. The choice marked a sharp shift for the Department of the Interior, which traditionally has been run by those seeking to promote the commercial use of natural resources. Babbitt pledged to increase the cattle grazing fees and mineral leases on public lands, which are heavily subsidized by the government. Bruce Babbitt also established the U.S. Biological Service, a new agency modeled on the U.S. Geological Service, to inventory the nation’s biological resources.
