Why Should You Study IT in Master?

Why Should You Study IT in Master

The information technology sector is developing and expanding, the craze of formal education in this regard is also increasing. Recently, information technology programs of various universities are being conducted in Nepal. Looking at the global environment, computer science was started in 1953. Named Cambridge Diploma in Computer Science, the course was brought by the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory. Similarly, in 1962, the first computer science program was started at Purde University in the United States.

Until 1990, only computer technology was used in such courses. With the advent of the Internet in the 1990’s, it came to be known as Information Technology (IT). Since 2005, the field has become wider and communication has merged with computer technology.

Students’ interest in such education is increasing due to good post-graduation potential, increasing use of technology, personal interest of students, low cost compared to other science and medical subjects.

For the first time in Nepal, in 1994, Kathmandu University conducted a program in computer engineering. Similarly, Trivi has been conducting educational programs through the Institute of Engineering Studies since 1998. At present, there are around 200 IT related educational colleges in Nepal. An estimated 7,500 are graduating in IT every year.

There are various IT programs in the Masters for students who have done Computer Science or Engineering at the undergraduate level. As the field of hardware and software engineering expands, so does the popularity of IT education. Students’ interest in such education is increasing due to good post-graduation potential, increasing use of technology, personal interest of students, low cost compared to other science and medical subjects. In Nepal, IT courses are being studied and taught from Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu University, Eastern University, Pokhara University and some foreign universities.

TU’s Masters program

is more attractive for IT students than the programs of Tribhuvan University. As a government university, it is natural to be attracted to its programs. The Master’s Degree in Computer Science and IT (MSc IT) has been started for the first time from the Central Department of Computer Science and IT, Tribhuvan University.

Similarly, Pulchowk Engineering Institute started Masters in Information and Communication Engineering for the first time. After that, Triville started Computer Systems and Knowledge Engineering. Also, MED ICT has been started by the Department of Education under TRIVI. On the other hand, it has been 2 years since the MBAIT program was started in TRI. A new program of Information and Knowledge Engineering is also being conducted at the Western Regional Campus (WRC) under the Tribhuvan University Institute of Engineering.

Most of the masters students in Nepal are job holders. There are more masters students to upgrade and promote themselves.

 TU’s MIT

Tribhuvan University is about to launch a new IT program MIT (Masters in Information Technology). This 2 year course has already been passed. Students with any IT background will be able to study in it. It also plans to launch a computer application for Trivandrum Masters, which has just started BCA. The Dean’s Office has informed that an application is being received from the Institute of Science and Technology for the connection of this subject.

Kathmandu University’s Masters Program

Another university, Kathmandu University (KU), is also conducting information technology related programs. The university has conducted ME Computer Engineering through the School of Engineering and Masters of Technology in IT (MTech in IT) through the Computer Science Department. Purushottam Kharel, head of the department, said that students have been fascinated with both these subjects since last year. According to him, although these two programs are similar, the degree is different.

MTech can be studied by students who have studied any IT subject. ME gets only because of BE. He said that both these are market oriented courses and the attraction has increased. As student seats are limited, KU selects students from the entrance exam. The university plans to increase the number of seats from next year.

KU students are found to be particularly focused on research. Space is also plentiful and KU helps to transform students’ business ideas into businesses through the Business Incubation Program. KU has informed that it will increase the number of seats from next year as it is taking 10-10 seats in both these subjects.

Due to the lack of suitable courses for masters in Nepal, lack of investment in research, quality of faculty members, etc., many students do not want to study masters in the country.

 Eastern University Programs

Eastern University is conducting Information Systems Engineering under Engineering in Information Technology Program. His most talked about subject is Masters in Computer Applications (MCA) in Computer Science. “Students have liked both these programs of Eastern University,” said Manoj Sah, head of Puset College, Biratnagar.

Similarly, MCA program is also being conducted by Kantipur City College, Kathmandu. In addition, Post Graduate Diploma (PGDCA) subject in Computer Application for students who have done Bachelors Degree in other subjects is also being conducted in Puset and KCC.

Programs of Pokhara University Pokhara University has introduced MCA, MSc Computer Science, MSc Computer Engineering, Masters in Computer Science and other programs in Masters.

NCIT, Lalitpur is conducting Masters of Computer Information Systems and MSc Computer Engineering programs.

There is always a shortage of manpower to do research in academic institutions in Nepal. Moreover, there is a small number of IT research manpower. As there is no good industry in Nepal, the function of research in the industry has not started yet.

Foreign University Programs

in Nepal Islington College, Lord Buddha Education Foundation, The British College and others are conducting foreign master’s programs in Nepal. Islington College, Kathmandu is conducting MSc (Computing) and MSc (Networking) subjects with affiliation from London Metropolitan University. The college informed that 3 batches have been passed out. Similarly, Lord Buddha Education Foundation has started Masters in IT Management course in Nepal through its affiliate College for Professional Studies in collaboration with Asia Pacific University of Malaysia. The British College is now running a Masters in Information Management program.

Why study IT in Masters?

Most of the masters students in world are employed. There are more masters students to upgrade and promote themselves. This is especially true of engineers in the telecom sector. Suvarna Shakya explains. Now that masters are needed to teach in schools, higher secondary schools and colleges, those who see a future in teaching are eager to study for a master’s degree. Shakya is of the opinion that if you are interested in research, you should study for a master’s degree. ‘A bachelor’s degree is enough to do professional work. A master’s degree is not only for teaching but also for continuous research, ‘he said.

After studying for a master’s degree, the role of research should be main and research papers should be published internationally. At present, a 4-year bachelor’s degree in Nepal can be followed by a PhD in 8 years through various universities abroad. At the same time, the number of students going abroad to study for a PhD in 3 years after completing a master’s degree in IT is also increasing. Therefore, the number of students who want to study for a master’s degree is increasing compared to the past, he said.

Students of Electronics, Communications, Computer Engineering in the engineering sector can study MSc Engineering directly. BSc Computer Science students in Computer Science, BCA students now have a very easy opportunity to do a Masters in IT.

Why are there less students and colleges in Masters?

More than 100 undergraduate colleges are running IT and computer engineering programs. But in proportion to that, there are very few colleges that teach Masters. Even the existing colleges have been admitting a small number of students. Most of the students who have passed Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science and Computer Engineering have not joined Masters in IT.

It is found that those who are studying for a master’s degree are also doing courses including MBL. Some passout students also want to start a professional career after graduation. They can enter the IT industry with the knowledge they need at graduation and with further professional training. There is also another group, many students trying to go abroad to study for a master’s degree. Due to the lack of suitable courses for masters in Nepal, lack of investment in research, quality of faculty members, etc., many students do not want to study masters in the country.

Masters for Research

In Nepal, there is always a shortage of manpower to conduct research in academic institutions. Moreover, there is a small number of IT research manpower. As there is no good industry in Nepal, the function of research in the industry has not started yet. “When research work starts in the industry, the people who have done Masters and PhD get the opportunity,” said Dr. Krishna Kumar of Kathmandu University. Purushottam Kharel said, ‘To create competent manpower is to create manpower that knows how to do research. For this, it is necessary to provide research and application oriented education to the students.

But the problem here is that there is no good environment in the academic institution. There is a problem with research funding. There is no funding for researchers on paper. Papers should be published in internationally recognized journals. You have to participate yourself. Therefore, there is a lack of funding research in Nepal’s universities.

Students

in Electronics, Communications, Computer Engineering from PhD Engineering Sector in IT can study MSc Engineering directly. BSc Computer Science students in Computer Science, BCA students now have a very easy opportunity to do a Masters in IT. Similarly, Kathmandu University and Tribhuvan University are running PhD programs. Five have done PhD in various subjects at KU and two have done PhD in Electronics and Communication Engineering at TU. The process of obtaining PhD in ICT for Rural Development has also started.
